Here is the Trust Building.
433 means 433 Spring Street in Downtown Los Angeles.
From Wikipedia: “The street can claim credit as the birthplace of the motion picture business in Los Angeles. In 1898, Thomas Edison filmed a 60-second film titled “South Spring Street Los Angeles California”, mounting a giant camera on a wagon to film the bustling action along South Spring Street.”
As Spring Street continued to develop, by the 1920’s it was known as Wall Street of the West.
The Trust Building was purchased by UCLA to create UCLA Downtown and UCLA recently released a list of 31 future university offices in the Trust Building. The 31 offices are under the headings of Academic, Arts, Community Outreach, and Research.
To get the full history of Spring Street, you go back before Wall Street of the West and the first motion picture filmed in Los Angeles to Bridget “Biddy” Mason. Her story from the mid to late 1800’s is told a block north of the Trust Building on the Biddy Mason Memorial Wall in Biddy Mason Memorial Park.
A former slave who became a major Downtown land owner, especially on Spring Street, Biddy Mason is called the first Real Estate Developer and the first Social Service Provider of Los Angeles.
From a February 22, 2022 NBC Los Angeles article about Biddy Mason: “Cheryl Cox and Robynn Cox are Mason’s great-great-great grandchildren. They have petitioned the city to rename Spring Street after her. Mason was a woman who’s been called the ‘Grandmother of LA,’ but is still unfamiliar to many Angelenos.”
Spring Street is in the Historic Core section of Downtown. It’s neighbor a couple blocks to the east is Skid Row.
There have been discussions about renaming Spring Street Park, directly across from the Trust Building, after Biddy Mason. Blair Beston, Executive Director of the Historic Core Business Improvement District, has the idea of renaming Pershing Square after Biddy Mason.
UCLA preparing to open 31 offices of Academic, Arts, Community Outreach, and Research is more than re-purposing the Trust Building. It’s about Building Trust.
