Two public LVNOC meetings for Firehouse 23 happened in 2018 and one was announced for January 2019 by the Bureau of Engineering. That meeting never happened. LVNOC stands for Local Volunteer Neighborhood Oversight Committee.
Four and a half years later, we are now in 2024 and a new version of LVNOC is being created. The Department of Cultural Affairs has selected it’s three candidates and we are waiting to find out who Council District 14 has selected for its four candidates. At that point a LVNOC meeting will take place.
The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) held a Community Art Day in Skid Row in January. I thought it went great. Kate Richards, Executive Director of Urban Voices Project, didn’t make it and I told her how good I felt about it.
I told Kate back in 2018 when all this was happening that one of the problems is we had all these different City Hall bodies involved and it was a mess. I told her I really liked Lisa Davis, the DCA Community Arts Director, who is now doing this and how DCA is at the center of it all. Kate, with a one plus one equals two tone of voice, said of course DCA is at the center of it all.
And so if DCA is at the center of it all, why are they selecting three candidates and Council District 14 is selecting four candidates for this new LVNOC?
